Tiglieto's urban layout dates back to the Middle Ages and its name is possibly derived from "tiglio", the Italian name for lime trees which once grew in the plain. All of its territory is characterized by rich vegetation and clear streams forming small pools.
Of great importance is the monumental complex of the Badia di Tiglieto, first Cistercian monastery established in Italy in 1120, with its medieval features on the outside as opposed to the French pre-gothic style of the inner parts.
Tiglieto is also famous for its wood-carving tradition and is a tourist destination.
